Hiring Movers For The First Time: 3 Things To Know

Posted on: 21 March 2023

Moving to a new home can be stressful, and it is certainly a lot of work. Hiring professional movers can make the whole process significantly easier. However, hiring mover also comes with its own challenges and intricacies. If this is your first time hiring professional movers, it is helpful to know the following things.

Some moving companies only do full-service moves.

A full-service move is when the same companies packs, loads, transports, and then unpacks all of your things. Some moving companies only offer these services as a package. In other words, if you hire them, you hire them to do it all. Other moving companies take a more a la carte approach. You can hire them to pack, but you don't have to. You can have them unpack, but you don't have to. If you want to do your own packing, avoid companies that offer full-service moves only and hire a moving company that lets you customize your services.

There are things that movers can't and won't move.

Before you hire a moving company, ask for a list of items on their "exclusions" list. These are either items they are not permitted, legally, to move, or they are items the company has decided it does not have the skills or resources to move. Most moving companies, for instance, will not move cash or valuable jewelry. Some will not move plants. Many won't move pianos since doing so requires special skills and equipment. Make sure you're able to make alternative plans for any items your preferred moving company won't be able to move for you.

You don't have to be there.

If you can be on-site when the movers show up to load the truck, that's great. But movers are generally willing and able to operate without you there. You may be able to drop a key off at their office or have a neighbor give it to them. Since movers are often dealing with customers who are in another city already, or who are juggling moving with their work schedule, they are used to doing their job without the customers being present all the time. Take this into account as you plan and schedule your move.

Knowing this information should make it easier for you to plan your move with professional movers. Remember that at the end of the day, what's most important is that they get all of your items to your new home safely. For more information, contact a moving service near you.
